Quadruple joy

Roller skating has become my jam.  The joy of movement to music is something that has oft eluded me.  I am not someone who excels at rhythm, while I have enjoyed dancing, it was almost always indoors, and rarely has it been something I do to Disney Princess songs.  I’ve always been a runner though, so enthusiastic movement has often brought me happiness.

Skating is different though!  It is complex, there are so many new tricks & moves to try to learn!  I have even gone into “skateparks “ sometimes & really done (and succeeded at) things that scared me!  Things I have then gone home and texted friends like “ I dropped in a bowl today! “

It’s like I feel athletic and accomplished and talented all at the same time. There’s also the coolness factor. Quad skating has become a thing and it’s some thing I can be a part of.

I am by no stretch of the imagination an excellent rollerskater, but I am an enthusiastic participant in my life and this hobby has given me so many beautiful rewards.

I’ve gone to my local rink and taken some lessons. Now I have a bunch of new eight year old friends.  It seems like every time I’m at the rink at the outdoor park I meet another new girl who has recently taken up rollerskating. In October it will be a year that I’ve been skating on quads. I have some goals- some of which I have met and some of which I have not yet met. I look back on my old videos and I simply cannot believe how far I’ve come - I can actually decide  in my mind that I want to learn something physical and with patience, practice, and learning from others I can eventually do it.

OK I would also be totally lying if I didn’t say something about how the outfits I get to wear are a big part of it it!  There is retro dust sprinkled all over quad skating and I am here for it.

From princess Lea hair to striped knee high socks, my skating wardrobe is a big part of the fun!  I have built a small community in my town, and a community online (all girls) who also have found joyful self expression rolling along.  I have skated by famous beaches, and in my driveway at night.  I think about it when I’m not rolling & look forward to my next chance.

So that’s about it for the awesome rockin’& rolling time that I have had this year.  Please consider taking up something new.  You know what they say about old dogs and new tricks!

Keep on rollin’ 🛼🛼💖!

    3. Precisely! I was just about to ask for a follow up article for us newbies. Believe me, it would go a long way. I'm tired of thinkin' I've got on enough just to wind up with scratches or actually go overboard and not be able to move comfortably. Jeez!

  3. Music and movement go together like peanut butter and jelly! They are meant for one another. My granddaughter bounces to a song as soon as she could stand up! I just think some people are different types of learners. Keep at it and you will grow and grow!

  7. I bet skating is great for fitness also! Exercise is such an important part of our human existence & we don’t often get enough in today’s world. A hundred years ago, daily exercise was part of life for everyday folks. But now, things are so easy we have become lazy ! It is an easy thing to put at the wayside. I think its wonderful that you are doing an artistic thing and also getting fitness with it! Congratulations on your passion!

    1. Well said! I agree with you how we don’t get exercise as part our regular lives, but I sure am grateful for the washing machine, vacuum cleaner & running water for that matter! It is a choice to make, to engage our bodies when we could just engage netflix right?!?

  9. You know, this strikes me because there was definitely a time in my life where I used to wish I could have a beautiful garden but I kept going around saying I don’t have a green thumb I don’t have a green thumb. It turns out that no matter what color your thumbs are you can have a beautiful garden you just have to actually do it. That’s what I see here about you you are “just doing it“. My garden and my yard are now some of my favorite things in my life. I’m so glad that you are sticking with this activity because sticking with things is what gives us a great results!

    1. Hi Lola! What I have heard is the best skates are the ones that you skate in every day I have several pairs and I had to stop myself from switching around all the time and just pick one pair now they are very dirty but they are my favorites. I ended up getting my first pair at my local surf shop, and my second pair from eBay.

  27. Maybe I didn't get new skates, but I got used skates. I made it to the national championships in used skates that were custom-made for another girl. I still have those skates. Underneath the arch, there was a name crossed out and my dad had 'Michelle Kwan' written in. Granted, they were a little big, but it worked.

  28. My Love-hate relationship with outdoor activities always surprises me. I never want to go out and since I know I should (cause its good), I make plans. A walk here, a run there, you know, a little fun stuff. But when the moment draws near that I have to get ready to leave the house... its war. Lol.
